In the past, this event was only offered to education and training coordinators. However, this year we would like to encourage Education and Training Coordinators/Counselors to bring those Gr. 12 students who might benefit from the tours (please note that the tours with a * beside them are only available for educators and are not for students).
Although the north has recently seen a major decline in job opportunities, there are still many exciting and rewarding careers available within the mining, hydro-electric generation, forestry, and manufacturing sectors. There is a wide range of career possibilities within these sectors at all levels, from exploration and field operations, to production and trades, management, finance and administration. Many companies offer high-paying permanent positions located in dynamic northern communities that boast modern amenities, northern attractions and high quality of life.
Our objective is to raise the awareness of regional career opportunities among northern students at the secondary and post-secondary school levels through career counseling at their organization through presentations and facility tours of several of northern Manitoba’s key industrial employers. We also want to encourage graduating students to consider northern jobs, and have them see first-hand what opportunities are available for them.
In order to accommodate more students and educators/coordinators, a rotation of the tours will be offered throughout the 2017-2018 school year. Each tour will have space limitations (most tours can accommodate 12) and participation will be based on a first-come, first serve basis. Please note that not all of the tours allow students (they are marked with an *), and for those that do, students must be registered/accompanied with an educator/counselor. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- Tour 1: Dec. 15, 2017 Keeyask – Manitoba Hydro Keeyask Site Tour
- Tour 2: Jan. 19, 2018 The Pas – Canadian Kraft Paper Co. Site Tour, Cranberry – Frontier Collegiate-Tech/Vocational Program*
- Tour 3: Feb. 23, 2018 Swan River – Lousiana Pacific Building Products Site Tour, Swan Valley Secondary School-Heavy Duty Program*
- Tour 4: Mar. 16, 2018 Thompson – Vale Presentation & Surface Tour*
- Tour 5: Apr. 20, 2018 Keeyask – Manitoba Hydro- Keeyask Site Tour
- Tour 6: May 11, 2018 Swan River – Lousiana Pacific Building Products Site Tour, Swan Valley Secondary School-Heavy Duty Program*
- Tour 7: May 17, 2018 The Pas – Canadian Kraft Paper Co. Site Tour, Cranberry – Frontier Collegiate-Tech/Vocational Program*
All trips will be one-day trips and subsidies of transportation and meals for educators/counsellors only, are being provided by the NMSC and its partners (not students). Therefore, we are encouraging educators/counsellors to bring students with them in the same vehicle so that at least transportation costs are covered. Students would need to bring their own lunch, drinks, and snacks as well.
Tour registration information and agenda will be provided once you indicate that you would like to register yourself and/or a group of students. As someone identified with an interest and expertise in increasing the awareness of our current and future labour market, we would be honored by your attendance. If you know of someone who would benefit from this experience, please let us know.
